About Aldgate

Aldgate was the eastern-most gateway through the London Wall leading from the City of London to Whitechapel and the East End; its name is thought to originate from ‘Old Gate’ or ‘Ael Gate’ (meaning All Gate, or Public Gate). The Aldgate Pump (at the junction with Leadenhall Street and Fenchurch Street) is the point that from 1700, distances were measured into the counties of Essex and Middlesex. Today the area is dominated by the insurance industry, with prominent buildings like the Lloyd’s Register building, 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin), and the Willis Building. There are also numerous residential developments in various stages of development, so we look forward to seeing insurance brokers and residents alike!
